Main item's description: ID card issued by the Department of Defense (DOD) to military personnel for identification purposes pursuant to the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949 relative to the treatment of prisoners of war.

Remarks: In the "1951 edition", the difference between "type 1" and "type 2" ID cards consists in the different font being used for each type. In the "1964 edition", the main differences consist in different fonts being used for each type and in different serial numbers and/or lack of them in the bottom left and/or right corners of the card; on "type 6" ID cards the field that normally reads "SERVICE NUMBER" reads "SERVICE NUMBER/SSAN". See picture on the left for a comparison of differences among the available variations.
